The Steps to Take Before Franchising Your Restaurant

You’re considering growing your carefully founded “baby” into a successful franchise, and it feels like everything is finally coming together. It’s every restaurateur’s dream; the final piece of the puzzle. The world is your oyster…or is it?

Not quite. Success might be rising on the horizon, but the saying “don’t run before you can walk” rings true. The most critical steps happen before franchising, not just after launching. Here’s what restaurant owners should put in place — starting with a solid framework is non-negotiable for a lucrative franchise.

Confirm Your Restaurant is Franchise-Ready

Remaining realistic is a sought-after trait amongst restaurant owners, and sadly, something many entrepreneurs lack. It’s okay to be emboldened, take risks, and be brave. Still, rule with logic, not emotions. Is your restaurant actually franchise-ready, or is this premature expansion?

Start with your concept. In 2024, there was a rise in experiential dining demands. In 2025, this all-senses-encompassing approach is still trending, and it’s being bolstered by technology advancements like AI. Is your concept replicable, and will it stand the test of time?

Secondly, evaluate the concrete details. Is branding consistent? Are recipes performing exceptionally well? Are reviews glowing with positive customer experiences? Do you have robust financials with 2-3 years of audited performance? If the first restaurant is underperforming, three guesses how the second will fare.

Lastly, how will this new location benefit operations? What demand does your in-depth market research convey?

Get Legal Documentation in Place

Decision-making is the longest process; that initial stage needs to be watertight. This step is all about securing legal documentation, and it’s a great time to enlist specialised hospitality lawyers.

Restaurant owners need to produce a detailed franchise agreement, establishing fees, royalties, territory rights, and renewal and exit terms. At this stage, logos and proprietary recipes must be registered intellectual property, too — proceed at your own peril. Nobody wants to waste time attempting to understand jargon, and everyone wants to protect their business and its assets. Get professional help.

Build a Detailed Franchise Operations Manual & Package

Replicating a business is difficult; there’s no two ways about it. Franchise owners have detailed documentation that serves as a manual for second (and potentially third, fourth, and everything beyond) restaurants.

Documents should cover site setup, menu specs, staff training, suppliers, marketing systems and operational standards. Establishing this package beforehand is what protects your franchise from branding inconsistencies — treat it as the recipe for success.

Establish Your Franchisee Recruitment, Training & Support Systems

Ultimately, even the best “franchise manual” cannot save a poorly-recruited business. Develop a system that identifies top candidates, provides ongoing training, and establishes a robust support framework. Staff performance must be excellent, especially with founders split between multiple sites.

These foundational steps are what separate the exceptional franchises from the mediocre, and even the failed. Franchising is a long road, so don’t rush.
